North Dakota Reading Corps (NDRC) an initiative that combines the people power of AmeriCorps with the science of how children learn to read. The goal is to help every child become a successful reader by the end of 3rd grade.

Program Performance

2015-2016 Performance

KINDERGARTEN - 3RD GRADE

  • A total of 774 students kindergarten through 3rd grade were served in Bismarck, Fargo, Hazen, Jamestown, Mandan, Minot and West Fargo.
  • Fourty-seven K-3 tutors served with N.D. Reading Corps.
  • On average, K-3 students received approximately 69 minutes of tutoring per week and 13 weeks of tutoring before qualifying to exit the program.
  • 81% of students had a weekly growth rate above the their grade level target.
  • 83% of K-3 students completing participation who demonstrated improved academic performance.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN

  • A total of 72 PreK students participated in N.D. Reading Corps. Five tutors served in the PreK program.
  • Of students who will likely attend kindergarten the following year (Age 4 and 5), 77% demonstrated growth on four or more of the five measures, and 100% demonstrated growth on at least one measure: (Picture Naming, Alliteration, Rhyming, Letter Name Fluency, and Letter Sound Fluency).
  • 96% of PreK students completing participation demonstrated gains in literacy skills.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

  • PreK and K-3 interventions were conducted with high degrees of fidelity (all with mean fidelity >90%) which means they were implemented as intended.
  • 100% of Internal Coaches reported that they would recommend Reading Corps to others in their network.
  • 97% of teachers responded that turos are a valuable component of their school's reading resources.
